JOB DESCRIPTION - PRESS SECRETARY

The Progressive Change Campaign Committee is looking for an experienced Press Secretary to implement our messaging strategy, political storytelling, and day-to-day pitching using our unique voice with reporters. Ideally, this person would have strong strategic instincts, project management skills, and ability to:

  • Identify opportunities to drive news – and seize those opportunities. Have a nose for news and ability to detect growing narratives so the organization constantly has situational awareness. Then, collaborate with the team on a strategy to seize opportunities, add our voice to growing news stories, and shift narratives.
  • Own the pitching! Strategize on overall pitching, including who to pitch and how widely to pitch. Be the main implementer of that plan. Be the lead on press releases and statements, in consultation with others.
  • Engage on the record. The co-founders do a lot of media, but you will also do on-the-record engagement.
  • Reporter relationship building. A big part of the job is building trust and relationships with a wide roster of reporters and managing our existing relationships. This includes regular (daily) phone calls with reporters – on specific subjects and general relationship building. This also includes facilitating for the organization co-founders and senior staff regular phone calls with reporters, sit-down coffees, and newsroom briefings, as well as generally nurturing relationships and attending events and high-profile national gatherings.
  • Organizational relationship building. Identify, schedule, execute, and report back on opportunities for the organization to engage with other organizations, pollsters, elected officials, and candidates that may overlap with press efforts.
  • Maintaining internal press shop systems. Keep press lists updated, respond to reporter requests, staff and prepare PCCC principals for interviews, share and monitor news hits. This also includes project management for longstanding department priorities and assisting the co-founders with communications-related scheduling.
  • Social media management. Create and cultivate intentional content that helps further the organization’s message and vision.
  • Consult and help our electoral, advocacy, and government relations teams. Various arms of the organization often have media rollouts about their work or the need to surgically pitch reporters to get key points out into the conversation. You will be a key consultant on the front end of planning this work and own advancing the press elements. You will also be asked to gut check some public messaging on social media, email, ads, etc.
  • Profiles and op-eds. Design a calendar each month for potential profiles and op-eds we can pitch, and be involved in the drafting of op-eds.
  • Occasional trainings and event planning. We run candidate and campaign staffer trainings, and you may occasionally be asked to run or help with media trainings. We also do press events both in person and virtually, which you’ll be a key consultor for.

Salary and Hiring

Salary is commensurate with skills and experience and will fall between $75,000-90,000, with upward mobility and payscale over time. All positions come with generous health/dental/vision benefits, life insurance, and an optional retirement account. Our team is virtual, with staff around the country. It is our strong preference that this role be Washington, DC based.
