Position Summary
The NYC Public Engagement Unit (PEU) is a proactive field team that goes out into the community to connect New Yorkers to key City services. Our staff are out there every day, meeting New Yorkers, helping them solve the City’s toughest challenges – housing, poverty, health, educational access and much more.
PEU’s Data team is at the heart of our operations. We use sophisticated data and targeting tools to find and reach the right people. We scrutinize our outreach results to see what’s working and how we can improve. And we build complex, powerful databases and pipelines to deliver information to decision makers across the City.
Our team needs an early-career Outreach Data Specialist to bring the magic to life. You should have at least one year of experience with data, preferably with field outreach data – lists of people to contact at the doors, on the phone, by text, on street corners, or digitally. Big plus if you’ve worked with outreach technologies like the Voter Activation Network, Hustle, Salesforce or Mobilize. Another big plus for SQL skills, Python, or related languages. But most importantly, you need to bring a hunger to learn, openness to absorbing new skills, and eagerness to contribute to a fast-paced team.

What You Would Do (Responsibilities)
- Work with a wide range of external data sources, including from other City agencies, to develop outreach plans and target lists.
- Get to know PEU’s outreach programs inside and out, and work with their leadership teams on marquis projects.
- Train and support PEU staff in the use of various outreach data systems, including the Voter Activation Network, Salesforce, Hustle and Mobilize.
- Use data to build dashboards, reports and presentations that inform PEU’s strategy.
- Help build backend data structures, pipelines and data engineering tools.
- Get out knocking doors, staffing events, and meeting New Yorkers in the field.
Who We’re Looking For (Requirements / Skills)
- 1+ years working with data, hopefully with lists of outreach targets.
- Experience with outreach data platforms (EveryAction/VAN, Salesforce), peer-to-peer texting platforms (Hustle, ThruText, Spoke), volunteer management systems (Mobilize, Reach) or related tools.
- SQL, Python or other data-related programming languages.
- Interest in public service and improving New Yorkers’ lives.
- Eagerness to learn, ask questions, and solve problems in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
