The District Office of Representative Lauren Underwood (IL-14) seeks a creative, strategic, and highly-organized communications professional to serve on our team in northern Illinois. Essential strengths of ideal candidates include strong written and verbal communication skills; exceptional tech, logistical, and troubleshooting skills; the ability to conceive and drive creative strategies; close attention to detail and time management; and the ability to troubleshoot, prioritize, and follow through on multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment. Spanish fluency and/or Illinois ties are strongly preferred.
The Press Secretary/Digital Director will work with the Representative, Communications Director, and other staff to develop exciting and innovative district-focused social and digital content that uplifts the Representative’s district, policy, and constituent service work on digital verticals. The role requires a strong writing, graphic, and video design skillset; the ability to learn and write in a principal’s voice with a focus on cultural competency; a deep understanding and curiosity for social platforms, trending topics, and what makes social content good; the ability to develop and implement effective digital growth strategies; and a commitment to constituent storytelling with quick turnarounds and tight deadlines.
The Press Secretary/Digital Director will also be responsible for supporting the day-to-day operations of the press team in Washington, including drafting local press releases, emails, local advisories, and daily clips; assisting with on-the-record responses to local media; ensuring content is in compliance with all applicable House rules and regulations; managing office communications tech and subscriptions; and creating content for and driving production of paid media campaigns. Availability for occasional weekend and evening work to support community events and outreach taking place at those times is required.
The position is located in-person in Illinois’ 14th Congressional District with occasional travel to Washington, D.C. The annual salary range for this position is $60,000 - $90,000; title and salary are dependent on experience and qualifications.
