JOB SUMMARY

Swing Left’s organizing program supports volunteers to build, lead, and engage events and groups of volunteers in their communities to help elect Democrats in the most competitive races through canvassing and phone banking.

This role is focused on Ground Truth, Swing Left’s people-powered organizing program designed to help Democrats win back power by reimagining how we talk with voters. Traditional voter contact often focuses on likely Democratic voters and starts too late to meaningfully persuade people who are undecided or disengaged. Ground Truth is built to change that.

Locations:

Candidates must be located in one of the following states, and willing and able to travel regularly, including by driving your own vehicle (with mileage reimbursement), to locations across the state.

• Alaska
• Arizona
• Colorado
• Iowa
• Boston, MA or Maine (based in either location, with travel across Maine)

RESPONSIBILITIES

Voter Contact

• Knock doors
• Host and lead in-person canvasses
• Attend and support volunteer-run canvasses in the field
• Support bus trips led by Swing Left to target districts for canvassing. This may include recruiting and training volunteer bus leaders, recruiting and confirming bus attendees, or directly riding the bus to lead logistics and volunteer training
• Lead and participate in virtual phone banks

Volunteer Recruitment and Support

• Conduct a high volume of phone calls to volunteers, including for recruitment, 1:1 support, debriefing and reshifting, and shift confirmations
• Meet directly with volunteers in person to build and strengthen relationships
• Represent Swing Left and speak at local grassroots groups and community meetings
• Facilitate virtual trainings via Zoom for volunteers and hosts, including canvass host trainings, phone bank trainings, and Ground Truth orientations
• Serve as part of an on-call rotation for evenings and weekends to support active canvasses and respond to volunteer host needs in real time

General Program

• Meet regular, measurable goals set with your manager (e.g. voter contacts, volunteer recruitment, canvass turnout)
• Support turf coordination by monitoring canvassing coverage and helping implement coordination decisions between Swing Left and campaign staff on the ground
• Assist with event logistics, including securing venues, coordinating materials, making recruitment calls, and confirming attendance
• Keep tracking tools and systems (including Google Sheets, Slack, Asana, and EveryAction) up to date to ensure accurate reporting and communication across teams
• Interface with local campaign organizing staff, as directed by manager

REQUIREMENTS

• A strong commitment to our mission and values
• Located in Arizona, Alaska, Colorado, Iowa, or Maine/Boston; willingness and ability to travel, including driving yourself in your own vehicle, to locations across the state
• Grassroots volunteer organizing experience in an electoral context
• Demonstrated experience and understanding of voter contact (including door knocking, high traffic canvassing, and phone banking) and electoral organizing strategies (including recruiting volunteers, team building, and managing volunteer leaders)
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaborate with colleagues effectively in a hybrid work environment
• A commitment to equity and belonging across all identities, and ability to learn and grow in this space
• Strong relationship management and prioritization skills
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• ​​High level of comfort with tools and technology used to support organizing (including Slack, VAN, email, digital platforms, and phone banking platforms)
• Availability for regular evening and weekend work to support volunteer engagement, canvasses, and debriefs

LOGISTICS

This is a part-time, hourly, non-exempt position based in the United States.

• Salary: $34.13/hour
• Expected hours: 15-20 hours/week, coordinated with supervisor
• Hours and availability:
  • We expect employees to be available for virtual and in-person meetings and asynchronous collaboration during regular business hours, including our core hours of 12pm–5pm ET
  • Volunteer engagement is a core responsibility of this role and frequently takes place outside of standard business hours, requiring regular evening and weekend work
• Location and travel requirement: Candidates must be located in Arizona, Alaska, Colorado, Iowa, or Maine/Boston, and willing and able to travel regularly, including by driving your own vehicle (with mileage reimbursement), to locations across the state
