The Democratic Governors Association (DGA), the campaign committee responsible for electing and supporting Democratic governors, is seeking a Deputy Research Director. This position will report to the Research Director. Applications will continue to be accepted until this position is filled.
The Deputy Research Director will assist in opposition research campaign services to a slate of 36 governors’ races. This person will be able to independently manage a portfolio of states, including scoping research books, editing research books, and managing tight project timelines in addition to daily rapid response tasks.
Previous research director experience on a statewide strongly preferred.
The expected salary range for this position is $100,000-$120,000 annually before benefits and applicable withholdings, but salary is commensurate with experience.
Primary Responsibilities
- Produce original candidate research memos and manage research projects by outside consultants;
- Perform thorough fact checks on all internal and external communication documents;
- Advise and collaborate with campaigns and state parties on research needs;
- Assist with other assignments and tasks as requested by the Research Director;
- Manage a team of 4-8 researchers.
Minimum Qualifications
- 3-4 years minimum of leadership in campaign research either with a consulting firm, a DC political committee, or directly with a campaign is preferred;
- Excellent research skills and strong attention to detail including experience designing and creating campaign research memos;
- Experience fact-checking paid media;
- Understanding of event tracking and media monitoring;
- Ability to write, edit, and fact-check with precision and calm on deadline during high-volume, fast-paced periods;
- Extensive experience with LexisNexis, public records requests, analyzing primary source documents, commonly-used research databases and other basic opposition research tasks;
- A pro-active, self-starter who can take direction/work as part of a team, but who can also be trusted to independently produce error-free research; and
- Understanding of how research fits into the overall campaign/communications picture.

Closing
The DGA offices are based in downtown Washington, DC and staff are currently in a hybrid work environment. This position is DC based and requires residence in the area and in-office work every week. The DGA will work with potential candidates to schedule remote interviews and process on-boarding procedures remotely, if necessary.
